Wolverines fall against Division I foes

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo dropped a pair of decisions against NCAA Division I opponents Saturday afternoon in first-day action in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Invitational at Bucknell University.

Grove City (1-4) opened play Saturday with a 14-2 setback against Marist. The Wolverines then dropped a 7-4 verdict against George Washington in their second match of the day.

Junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) scored both Grove City goals against Marist. Sophomores Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each assisted on McRuer's goals. Stiebler also had three steals.

Senior goalie Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped five shots.

Thompson scored twice and assisted on a third goal in Saturday's nightcap against George Washington. Stiebler and freshman Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) also scored for Grove City.

McRuer assisted on two goals while sophomore Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) recorded one assist. Defensively, McRuer picked up five steals while Stiebler had four thefts. Walter stopped six shots.

Grove City will wrap up play in the 8-team tournament Sunday at 9 a.m. against Slippery Rock. Grove City is the only Division III program in the field.
