Wolverines finish 3-2 at Midwest Invitational

WHEATON, Ill. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team split a pair of matches at Wheaton (Ill.) College's Midwest Invitational Saturday, finishing the weekend tournament with a 3-2 mark. After dropping a 7-6 decision to Carthage Saturday afternoon, Grove City (5-7) rebounded for a 16-4 triumph over host Wheaton.

Against Carthage, sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) fired in three goals for Grove City while junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) scored twice. Sophomore Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) added a goal for Grove City.

Sophomore Liz Juncker (Huron, Mich./Huron) assisted on two goals while Stiebler, junior Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and freshman Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) all recorded one assist each.

McRuer recorded five steals while Lauren Baur and Thompson each posted three steals. Stiebler also blocked three shots. Senior goalkeeper Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped five shots for Grove City.

Stiebler led Grove City with four goals against Wheaton, giving her 13 total goals at the Invitational. McRuer and Thompson each scored three times while Lauren Baur registered a pair of goals. LaPalme, Juncker, freshman Stephanie Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and sophomore Beth Poston (Onsted, Mich./Lenawee Christian) all scored once.

Grove City scored its 16 goals on just 28 total shots.

Lauren Baur distributed three assists. Stiebler assisted on two goals, as did Whitney Baur. Juncker, LaPalme, McRuer and Walter all had one assist.

In goal, Walter recorded 10 saves.

Grove City returns to action next Saturday, April 5 with CWPA Western Division matches against Slippery Rock and Indiana.
