Gannon clips Grove City, 11-8

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team dropped an 11-8 decision to Gannon Friday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships at the Grove City College Pool. Grove City, the No. 4 seed, will now play Penn State Behrend in a consolation bracket match at 9 a.m. Saturday. Fifth-seeded Gannon will play No. 1 Michigan at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Grove City (8-10) grabbed a 3-1 lead in the first period but Gannon rallied to lead by halftime, 6-4.

Sophomores Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both fired in three goals each for the Wolverines. Junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) each scored once.

McRuer and Stiebler each assisted on two goals while Thompson added one assist.

In goal, senior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped nine shots. Walter and McRuer both tallied three steals while Thompson blocked two shots in the field.

Grove City finished 4-3 in Western Division play this year, including a 9-6 win over Gannon April 8.
