Wolverines fall twice at Collegiate III National Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team dropped a 12-5 decision to Cal Lutheran in the opening match of pool play at the Collegiate III National Championships, hosted by Connecticut College Friday morning. The Wolverines then concluded the first day of the tournament with a 13-5 setback against Cal State-East Bay.

In Friday's opener, Grove City (10-12) trailed just 3-2 after the first period but Cal Lutheran took command of the match by scoring three unanswered goals in the second period. Cal Lutheran then sealed the win with five goals in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) led Grove City with three goals while sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) both scored once. Stiebler also assisted on the Thompson and McRuer goals. Sophomore Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) also recorded an assist.

Defensively, McRuer recorded four steals. In goal, senior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore) stopped seven shots.

Stiebler and McRuer each scored twice against East Bay while freshman Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) added a goal. Walter stopped nine shots.

CSU East Bay led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead to 9-3 by halftime.

Grove City will conclude pool play Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against Colorado College.
