Grove City takes two

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team is now 12-12 overall after sweeping a pair of matches Saturday at the Collegiate III National Championships, hosted by Connecticut College.

Grove City opened the second day of the tournament with a 6-2 win over Colorado College in pool play. The Wolverines then earned a 10-6 win over host Connecticut College to earn a berth in Sunday's fifth-place match.

Junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) fired in three goals against Colorado College while freshman Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), sophomore Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each scored once. Baur assisted on three goals while Thompson added one assist.

McRuer also paced Grove City defensively with seven steals. Stiebler picked up six thefts while Baur added three takeaways. In goal, senior Keala Walter (Keaau, Hawaii/Newberg, Ore.) stopped eight of 10 shots faced.

Against Connecticut College, Grove City broke open a tight match with five fourth-quarter goals. Stiebler registered five goals for Grove City, including three in the fourth period. Baur and classmate Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) both scored twice while McRuer also scored.

Baur, sophomore Liz Juncker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Thompson all assisted on one goal each.

Walter stopped six shots to earn the win in goal for the Wolverines. Stiebler tallied seven steals while McRuer had five steals. Thompson chipped in with four takeaways.

Grove City will play either Carthage or Colorado College at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the fifth-place match.
