Wolverines open Western Division play

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division play Saturday at the University of Michigan. Grove City opened play with a 14-1 setback against Michigan. However, Grove City rebounded later to earn a 16-1 win over Penn State Behrend in the afternoon.

Grove City completed its tripleheader with a 15-2 setback against Indiana University.

Nine different Grove City players scored in the win over Penn State Behrend. Junior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and sophomore Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) both fired in three goals to pace the Wolverines. Sophomore Stephanie Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), freshman Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and senior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) each scored a pair of goals.

Sophomore Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), senior Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), senior Monica Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and sophomore Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) all scored once in the win.

Lauren Baur also assisted on two goals while Whitney Baur, Monica Gigliotti and McRuer each tallied one assist. Johnson had five steals while McRuer registered three thefts.

Junior goalie Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) stopped seven shots faced. Grove City led 6-0 after the first period. The Wolverines extended the lead to 11-1 by halftime.

Johnson scored Grove City's lone goal against Michigan. McRuer posted three steals. Stiebler recorded five saves.

Thompson scored one goal and assisted on a LaPalme goal against Indiana. McRuer blocked a pair of shots in the field while Stiebler stopped seven shots.

Grove City opens the home schedule Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Colorado College.
