Grove City tops Colorado College

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Six different Grove City College players scored goals Thursday night as the Wolverines opened the home portion of the 2009 schedule with an 11-6 win over Colorado College (2-1) in non-conference women's water polo action in the Grove City College Pool.

Freshman Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in four goals for the Wolverines (3-5) while junior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and senior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) both scored twice.

Sophomore Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), sophomore Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) and junior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all scored once.

McRuer assisted on three goals while Stiebler assisted on two scores.

Defensively, Stiebler and McRuer both recorded four steals while Baur and Johnson each had three takeaways. Freshman Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) made her collegiate debut in goal and stopped six shots in the first half. Stiebler took over in goal in the second half and also recorded six saves.

Grove City bolted jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the second quarter before extending the advantage to 8-3 by halftime.

The Wolverines return to action March 27 at Gannon. Grove City will face Utica at 4 p.m. before playing Gannon at 7 p.m.
