Wolverines split in Erie

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team split a pair of matches at Gannon University Friday evening. The Wolverines (4-6) opened play with a 12-4 victory over Utica. In the second match of the night, Grove City fell to CWPA Western Division rival Gannon 14-9.

Grove City bolted to a 9-3 lead by halftime against Utica. Senior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University), junior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and freshman Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) all fired in three goals each in the opener.

Sophomore Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas), senior Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) each scored once.

Johnson, LaPalme, junior Beth Poston (Onsted, Mich./Lenawee Christian) and junior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) all assisted on two goals each. McRuer added an assist.

Defensively, Thompson paced Grove City with five steals while Johnson had four assists. White and freshman Larissa Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) both had three steals.

Stiebler stopped six shots in goal while freshman Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) made one save.

Stiebler fired in four goals during her three periods of field play against Gannon. McRuer scored three times while Johnson and Thompson both had one goal each. Thompson also added an assist and two steals.

Fleming and Stiebler split time in goal for Grove City. Fleming made seven saves while Stiebler stopped three shots.

Grove City will host Mercyhurst and Washington & Jefferson Saturday in Western Division play. The Wolverines host Mercyhurst at 10 a.m. The W&J match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
