Grove City rallies past Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned a come-from-behind 11-7 victory over host Wheaton (Ill.) Thursday night in the opening round of the Midwest Invitational. Grove City (7-7) trailed 4-1 early in the second quarter but charged back for the win.

Senior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) fired in four goals to pace the Wolverines while juniors Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored twice.

Sophomore Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), senior Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and freshman Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) all scored once in the win. Stiebler and sophomore Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) each recorded two assists while Johnson had one assist.

McRuer chalked up nine steals defensively while Thompson had four steals. Lauren Baur collected three thefts. Stiebler blocked two shots in the field.

In goal, freshman Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) earned the win after stopping eight shots.

Grove City will continue play in the Midwest Invitational Friday at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. The Wolverines face Macalester at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. Grove City will then play Colorado College at 5:15 EDT. Carthage is the host institution for the tournament; Grove City played at Wheaton to help balance out the schedule of the three-day event.
