Grove City wins twice

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team improved to 9-7 Friday with a pair of victories at the Carthage (Wis.) Midwest Invitational. Grove City opened play Friday morning with a 7-3 win over Macalester. The Wolverines then completed the Friday sweep with an 11-4 triumph over Colorado College. Grove City is 3-0 at the Invitational.

Junior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) fired in four goals for Grove City against Macalester while junior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored twice and assisted on a third goal.

Senior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) added a goal while sophomore Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) and freshman Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each had one assist.

LaPalme and Stiebler both had four steals while McRuer recorded three thefts. In goal, freshman Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) stopped six shots to pick up the win.

Against Colorado College, Grove City broke a 1-1 tie by scoring six second-period goals. Stiebler racked up three goals while Thompson and McRuer both scored a pair. Johnson, LaPalme, senior Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Stephanie Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) all scored once each.

Stiebler also tallied a career-high six assists while Gigliotti assisted two goals. Johnson and LaPalme both picked up an assist.

McRuer's five steals paced the Wolverine defense. Johnson and Stiebler both registered four steals. Fleming stopped four shots in goal.

Grove City will look to complete an undefeated weekend Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines face host Carthage and longtime rival Washington & Jefferson. Grove City plays Carthage at 12:30 p.m. Eastern while the W&J match is scheduled for 3:45.
