Grove City drops two at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team dropped to 6-6 overall Saturday afternoon with a pair of setbacks at the University of Michigan's Wolverine Invitational. Grove City opened the tournament with an 18-5 setback against host Michigan.

In Grove City's second match of the day, Gannon pulled out a 9-5 victory over the Wolverines.

Sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) paced Grove City with three goals against Michigan while senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored twice. Senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded one assist.

Defensively, Johnson and Stiebler each had three steals. In goal, freshman Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped eight shots. Grove City trailed just 3-1 after the first period but Michigan broke the game open with six second-quarter goals.

Gannon broke a 4-4 tie in the third period by scoring five of the final six goals in the game. Junior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) fired in three goals for Grove City while Stiebler and Thompson each scored once apiece. Stiebler and Thompson also had two assists each while Johnston had one assist.

Johnston also stopped nine shots for Grove City while Thompson had a team-high five steals.

Grove City will face Iona Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the second day of action in the invitational. Grove City will also play Siena at 1:10 p.m.
