Wolverines drop two

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team dropped a pair of high-scoring games against NCAA Division I foes Sunday at the University of Michigan Wolverine Invitational.

Grove City opened the day with a 16-11 setback against Iona. Grove City (6-8) then closed the weekend with a 15-11 loss to Siena.

Four Grove City players posted multi-goal efforts against Iona. Senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) fired in four goals for the Wolverines while sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored three times. Junior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both recorded a pair of goals.

Thompson also assisted on two scores while Stiebler had one assist. Grove City trailed 9-2 late in the first half but eventually closed to within 11-9 in the third quarter. However, the Gaels pulled away in the final period.

In goal, freshman Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) collected two saves. Thompson had three steals.

Johnson matched a career high with seven goals against Siena. Thompson and sophomore Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) both scored a pair of goals for Grove City.

Thompson assisted on four goals while Fleming, Johnson and LaPalme all tallied one assist each. In goal, Johnston made a dozen saves.

Grove City will visit Gannon Wednesday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
