Grove City tops Connecticut College
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team improved to 6-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play Friday night by earning a 17-5 win over host Connecticut College in the opening match of CWPA weekend play.
The Wolverines (8-9 overall) jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and led 12-4 at halftime. Eight different players scored at least once in the win.
Senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) fired in four goals for Grove City while junior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both scored three times each. Senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and junior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) each scored a pair of goals.
Junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), sophomore Amy Fallas (Gaithersburg, Md./Montgomery) and freshman Michelle Shimrock (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) all scored once.
Thompson also assisted on three goals while Johnson had two assists. Baur, sophomore Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schnectady Christian), LaPalme and Stiebler all assisted on one goal apiece.
In goal, freshman Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped 10 shots to record the win.
Grove City will play a trio of matches Saturday at Connecticut College. The Wolverines face Chatham at 9 a.m. before squaring off with Penn State Behrend at 3 p.m. Grove City will conclude the weekend with a match against Washington & Jefferson at 6 p.m.
