Grove City wins on Senior Night

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team wrapped up the home portion of the 2010 schedule Saturday night with an 8-5 Senior Night victory over visiting Gannon in the James E. Longnecker Pool.

Earlier in the afternoon, Grove City (13-10) dropped a 13-4 decision to visiting Mercyhurst.

Against Gannon, junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both fired in three goals each while senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and junior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) each scored once.

Thompson and sophomore Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annadale) both assisted on one goal apiece.

In goal, freshman Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped 13 shots to earn the win. Senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) recorded eight steals.

Johnson, Stiebler, Thompson and junior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) all scored goals in Saturday's opener against Mercyhurst. Baur and Thompson both had three steals while Johnston notched eight saves. Mercyhurst broke the game open with six goals in the second period.

Grove City has won its home finale in each of the last six seasons. Three of the six wins have come against Gannon in that span. The Wolverines honored Stiebler and Thompson prior to Saturday night's clash with Gannon.

The Wolverines return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships in Utica, N.Y.
