Grove City wins CWPA Division III title

UTICA, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team rallied past second-seeded Carthage to earn an 8-7 win in the title match of the inaugural Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at Utica College's Pool of Champions.

Grove City (16-10) trailed 7-6 entering the fourth period but scored twice to secure the victory. Junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) fired in three goals each to help lift the Wolverines to the win. Sophomore Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian) and senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each scored once.

Baur, Stiebler and junior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) all recorded one assist each.

Stiebler also notched four steals and Thompson had three takeaways. Freshman goaltender Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped six shots to preserve the win.

Thompson earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player along with All-Tournament First Team recognition. Stiebler also earned All-Tournament First Team. Johnston received Second Team honors. Head coach Jon Miller earned Coach of the Tournament distinction.

Grove City entered the tournament as the top seed after posting a 10-0 league record this season. The Wolverines also defeated Carthage during the regular season March 6, 13-5.

The final tournament standings reflected the teams' seeding entering the competition. Third-seeded Wheaton finished third, followed by No. 4 Washington & Jefferson and No. 5 Connecticut College. Sixth-seeded Macalester finished sixth, followed by No. 7 Penn State Behrend, No. 8 Chatham and No. 9 Utica.
