Wolverines take 4th

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team wrapped up the 2010 season by earning fourth place at the Collegiate III National Championships, hosted by Carthage College Saturday at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center. The fourth-place finish is the best national finish in program history.

Grove City (17-14) dropped the third-place match Saturday afternoon to host Carthage, 11-9, in the Wolverines' final match of the weekend. Grove City opened play Saturday with a 10-8 setback against California Lutheran. Friday night, Carthage edged Grove City in overtime, 8-7, in pool play.

Five Grove City players scored goals Friday night against Carthage. Senior Kate Stiebler (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both scored twice while sophomore Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale), senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and junior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) all scored once.

Junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) assisted on two goals and Stiebler posted one assist. Defensively, Johnson recorded five steals while Baur had four thefts. Thompson tallied three takeaways.

In goal, freshman Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) made nine saves.

Stiebler's four goals helped pace the Wolverines in Saturday's opener against Cal Lutheran. Baur scored twice while Johnson and Thompson each fired in one goal. Thompson also assisted on two other goals.

Johnson chalked up six steals while in goal, Johnston stopped nine shots.

Johnson and Stiebler fired in four goals apiece in the third-place match against Carthage. Thompson tallied a goal and two assists. Johnson assisted two goals while Stiebler and junior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) each had one assist. Johnston made 15 saves.

Grove City's 17-14 overall record is the best in the 11-year history of the program. The Wolverines had finished fifth at the Collegiate III Championships in both 2007 and 2008.
