Wolverines down Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2011 season Wednesday night with a 16-5 victory at Notre Dame College in the host Falcons' intercollegiate debut.

Eight Grove City players scored at least once in the win. Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in four goals. Senior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) and freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) each scored three times while senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) both scored twice.

Senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) each scored once. Both Lauren Baur and Wilson assisted on four goals apiece. White had two assists while Kristi Baur and LaPalme each had one assist.

Wilson paced the defense with four steals. In goal, sophomores Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) and Ashley Sammons (Santee, Calif./Santana) both saw action. Johnston made one save while Sammons stopped five shots.

Grove City (1-0) led 11-3 at halftime. It is Grove City's first-ever win in a season opener.

Grove City heads to California for a series of five matches. The Wolverines will face California Baptist Friday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern. Grove City will then compete in the Chapman University Tournament over the weekend in Orange, Calif.
