Wolverines compete at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team competed in the Chapman University Tournament Saturday and Sunday, competing against some of California's top small-college water polo programs.

Saturday, Grove City dropped a 10-6 decision to California Lutheran in the tournament opener. Grove City then fell to Whittier in Saturday's second match, 13-6.

The Wolverines concluded the tournament with a 10-6 setback against host Chapman and a 7-6 setback against La Verne in the weekend finale Sunday.

Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in three goals against Cal Lutheran Saturday to help pace Grove City. Senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) all scored once for Grove City.

Johnson pumped in all six goals for Grove City in Saturday's nightcap against Whittier. Whittier jumped out to an 8-2 lead by halftime but the Wolverines slashed the lead to 8-5 with five minutes left in the match.

Lauren Baur and Johnson each scored a pair of goals in Sunday afternoon's opener with Chapman. Kristi Baur and LaPalme both scored goals for Grove City, also. Chapman pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Wolverines 3-0.

La Verne's Alexandra Escobar scored with 13 seconds left Sunday evening to give La Verne a 7-6 win over Grove City. The match featured five lead changes.

Johnson scored twice for the Wolverines (1-5) while Kristi Baur, Lauren Baur, LaPalme and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) each scored once.

Grove City will open Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play this weekend at home. Grove City will host Chatham Friday at noon in the league opener at James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.
