Grove City rolls to two CWPA wins

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III conference play Friday with a pair of home victories in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool. Grove City (3-5, 2-0) opened the day with a 16-6 win over visiting Chatham.

Grove City then closed the day with a 17-2 victory over Penn State Behrend.

Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in seven goals Friday afternoon to help lead Grove City to the win over Chatham. Senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored three times and freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) added two goals.

Junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas), senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), junior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and junior Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian) all scored once.

Lauren Baur, Fleming, Johnson, LaPalme and Wilson all had one assist each. Lauren Baur paced the defense with six steals while Wilson and Kristi Baur both had four steals. Sophomores Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) and Ashlee Sammons (Santee, Calif./Santana) each made four saves in goal. Johnston also had one assist.

Thirteen different players scored in Friday's nightcap against Penn State Behrend. Johnson racked up four goals. LaPalme and Wilson both scored twice.

Kristi Baur, Lauren Baur, Brush, junior Amy Fallas (Gaithersburg, Md./Montgomery), Fleming, senior Stephanie Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), Johnston, sophomore Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), freshman Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and senior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) all scored once in the win.

Kristi Baur assisted on two goals. Fallas, Fleming, Johnson and Johnston had one assist each. Lauren Baur racked up seven steals while Johnson and Keibler both had three thefts. Sammons stopped four shots.

Grove City will host W&J at 10:30 a.m. Saturday as part of CWPA Division III play.
