Wolverines now 5-0 in CWPA

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team remained undefeated in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play Saturday by sweeping three conference opponents at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.

Grove City opened the day with a 12-2 triumph over longtime rival Washington & Jefferson Saturday morning. The Wolverines (6-5, 5-0 CWPA) then earned a 12-6 win over Connecticut College during the afternoon. Saturday night, Grove City completed the sweep with a 13-6 win over Utica.

Grove City jumped out to a 9-1 lead by halftime against Washington & Jefferson and rolled to the win. Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in seven goals while senior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) both scored twice.

Senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) added a goal and two assists. Johnson also assisted on two other goals. Senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) each had one assist.

Kristi Baur led the defense with seven steals and Wilson had four thefts. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Sammons (Santee, Calif./Santana) stopped seven shots for Grove City.

Against Connecticut College, Johnson rifled in five goals for Grove City while Lauren Baur and Wilson both scored twice.

Kristi Baur, junior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and White all scored once. Kristi Baur also assisted on two goals while Wilson, LaPalme and sophomore Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) all recorded one assist each.

Lauren Baur notched five steals to help lead the defensive effort. Kristi Baur and Wilson both had three takeaways. Sammons stopped a dozen shots.

Grove City broke open its match with Utica early, taking an 8-1 lead in the first period. Eight different Wolverines scored in the win. Johnson scored five goals and LaPalme recorded three scores. Kristi Baur, Lauren Baur, Fleming, freshman Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and Wilson all scored once.

Lauren Baur, LaPalme and Fleming all tallied two assists each. Johnson, White and Wilson each assisted one goal. Wilson helped lead the defense with a career-high eight steals. Kristi Baur chalked up four steals and Johnson had three steals. Johnston made 11 saves in goal.

Grove City returns to action next weekend at the University of Michigan Invitational.
