Grove City drops two

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team fell to 8-11 overall Saturday by dropping a pair of home matches against NCAA Division II foes in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool. Grove City opened the day with a 14-6 setback against Gannon. In the nightcap, Mercyhurst slipped past the Wolverines 9-4.

Four different Grove City players scored goals against Gannon Saturday afternoon. Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in three goals, giving her a team-leading 63 on the season.

Senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas), junior Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian) and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) all scored once. Wilson also had two assists and senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) assisted on one goal.

In goal, sophomore Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped seven shots.

Wilson scored twice against Mercyhurst Saturday night. Baur and LaPalme also scored once each. LaPalme and freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) both tallied assists. Lauren Baur led the defense with three steals.

Johnston made nine saves against Mercyhurst.

Grove City will return to action Friday and Saturday with a series of Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III matches at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.
