Wolverines go 1-1 at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team went 1-1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play at Carthage College Friday evening. The Wolverines (9-12, 6-1 CWPA Division III) opened the day with a 14-4 win over Macalester. In Friday's nightcap, host Carthage pulled out a 10-7 win over the Wolverines.

Against Macalester, six different Wolverines scored goals in the win. Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in five goals while junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) and freshman Kristi Baur (North Penn, Pa./North Wales) each scored three times.

Senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) scored twice and senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Wales) added a goal. Lauren Baur, junior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale), senior Stephanie Gigliotti (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and senior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) all assisted on one goal each.

Defensively, Johnson racked up six steals. Lauren Baur and Wilson both had four thefts. Sophomore Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped eight shots in goal to earn the win.

Grove City trailed 7-2 in the third quarter against Carthage before charging back to forge a 7-7 tie in the fourth quarter. However, Carthage scored the final three goals of the match to secure the win.

Lauren Baur scored twice for the Wolverines, who had six different players score goals. Kristin Baur, Johnson, LaPalme, White and Wilson all scored once each. LaPalme assisted on two scores while Kristi Baur and Wilson both had one assist.

Johnston stopped five shots for Grove City. The setback snaps Grove City's 16-match win streak in CWPA Division III play. In 2010, Grove City nipped Carthage 8-7 in the CWPA Division III Championship Game.

Grove City will conclude the CWPA Division III regular season Saturday with matches against Chatham, Washington & Jefferson and Wheaton (Ill.). Action begins at 10 a.m. Eastern.
