Grove City wins three at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team improved to 9-1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Division III conference Saturday by earning three wins at Carthage College. Grove City opened the day with a 12-4 win over Chatham. The Wolverines (12-12 overall) then rolled to a 9-4 win over longtime rival Washington & Jefferson in Saturday's second clash.

Grove City wrapped up the weekend by downing Wheaton (Ill.) 12-4.

Against Chatham, Grove City led 5-0 after one period and extended the lead to 10-0 by halftime. Seven different Wolverines scored in the win, led by a three-goal outing from junior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale). Senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) all scored twice.

Freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) and senior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) each had one goal. Lauren Baur also had two assists while Kristi Baur, Fleming and Wilson assisted on goal apiece.

In goal, sophomores Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) and Ashley Sammons (Santee, Calif./Santana) combiend to stop nine shots. Johnston had six saves in the first half and Sammons stopped three in the second half.

Kristi Baur and Wilson both scored three goals each in the win over W&J. Johnson added two goals while Lauren Baur scored once while assisting on two other scores. Johnson and LaPalme each had one assist. Johnston stopped four shots.

Lauren Baur, Johnson and Wilson all scored three goals against Wheaton. Kristin Baur, Fleming and freshman Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) each registered one goal. LaPalme assisted on three goals while Kristi Baur had two assists. Lauren Baur had one assist.

Johnston stopped seven shots in the win. Grove City led just 1-0 at halftime but took control of the match by outscoring the Thunder 8-1 in the third quarter.

Grove City will compete in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational next Saturday, April 16.
