Wolverines pick up pair of wins

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team closed the 2011 regular season Saturday by earning a pair of wins at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in the Henry Memorial Center. Grove City (14-12) rolled to a 13-3 win over Penn State Behrend in Saturday's opener. The Wolverines then stormed to a 16-3 victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) in the second match of the day.

Nine Grove City players scored at least once against Behrend. Senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas), junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) and freshmen Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) all scored twice each.

Senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), junior Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian), sophomore Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo), senior Allison White (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) all scored once each. Lauren Baur and sophomore Ashley Sammons (Santee, Calif./Santana) both had two assists each.

Brush, Johnson, LaPalme, White and Wilson all assisted on one goal. Defensively, Kristi Baur, Lauren Baur and Wilson all had four steals. Sammons stopped eight shots in goal. Grove City led 6-0 after one quarter.

LaPalme and Wilson both scored four goals each in the victory over Notre Dame. LaPalme also assisted on four other Wolverine scores. Kristi Baur fired in three goals while Lauren Baur and Johnson each scored a pair. Brush also scored. Both Baurs had one assist each, as did Johnston.

Wilson led Grove City with six steals. Johnson had five takeaways and Lauren Baur added four thefts. Johnston stopped nine shots.

Grove City returns to action April 29-30 for the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships, hosted by Macalester College. The Wolverines (9-1 CWPA Division III) will be the No. 2 seed in the nine-team tournament. Grove City won the inaugural CWPA Division III title in 2010.
