Grove City whips W&J for CWPA crown

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team successfully defended its Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III championship Saturday afternoon by earning a 7-2 victory over fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the CWPA Division III championship match at Macalester College. The second-seeded Wolverines (17-12 overall) jumped out to a 5-1 lead by halftime and extended the lead to 7-1 in the third period.

Junior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in three goals in the title match and earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Senior Brittany LaPalme (Hollywood, Fla./Thomas Aquinas) and junior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) each scored twice. LaPalme and Wilson both assisted on two goals each and freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) assisted one goal.

Wilson added five steals and Baur had three steals. Wilson earned Second Team All-Tournament recognition, as did senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn).

In goal, sophomore Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped nine shots. The Grove City defense allowed just six goals in three matches at the CWPA Division III Championships.

Grove City also won the inaugural conference title in 2010.
