Wolverines roll past Salem International
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2012 season Friday night with a 23-1 win over visiting Salem International in non-conference action at the James E. Longnecker Pool.
Eight different Wolverines scored in the victory. Senior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in six goals and classmate Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian) scored five times to help pace Grove City.
Freshman Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) recorded four goals in her collegiate debut while senior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School), sophomore Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and sophomore Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) all scored twice.
Seniors Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and Amy Fallas (Gaithersburg, Md./Montgomery) both scored once.
Baur, Brush and Wilson all assisted on three goals each. Fleming, Johnson and freshman Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) each had two assists and Hulsebus aided on one goal.
In goal, junior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped seven of eight shots faced.
The teams had not met since 2003. This is the first season of varsity competition for Salem International after the program had been on an eight-year hiatus.
The Wolverines will face Whittier (Calif.) next Thursday, March 1, at 8 p.m. Eastern. That match begins a six-match road trip in California for Grove City.
