Whittier edges Grove City

WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team began its series of matches in California Thursday night with a 12-8 setback at Whittier in non-conference action. Grove City (1-1) jumped out to a 4-2 lead but the Poets (4-3) rallied for the home win.

Senior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in five goals for Grove City, including four in the first quarter. Senior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) scored twice in the fourth quarter and freshman Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) also scored once.

Sophomore Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) assisted on three goals. Wilson, senior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and freshman Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) all recorded one assist.

In goal, junior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped seven shots.

Grove City returns to action Friday in Thousand Oaks, Calif., when the Wolverines face Fresno Pacific and host California Lutheran in the Posada Royale Invitational. The Fresno Pacific match begins at 11 a.m. Eastern and the California Lutheran match is scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern.
