Grove City completes perfect weekend
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team improved to 5-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play Saturday by earning three wins at Washington & Jefferson College's Henry Memorial Center. Grove City earned 14-4 wins over Chatham and Carthage before closing Saturday's tripleheader with a 19-9 triumph over Macalester.
Five different Wolverines scored in the win over Chatham Saturday. Sophomore Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and senior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both pumped in four goals while freshman Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) scored three times.
Freshman Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) scored twice and senior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) added a goal.
Sophomore Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) posted a team-leading five assists and Hinkle assisted on three goals. Hulsebus tallied two assists while senior Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian), senior Amy Fallas (Gaithersburg, Md./Montgomery) and junior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) all had one assist each.
Johnston earned the win in goal by making 10 saves. Johnson posted four steals. Grove City led 9-1 at halftime.
Wilson fired in six goals to help Grove City roll past Carthage in Saturday's second match. Johnson scored three times while Wells scored two goals. Hinkle, Fallas and senior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) all scored one goal apiece.
Hulsebus recorded a career-high five assists and Baur added three assists. Hinkle assisted on two goals while Fleming, Johnson, Johnston and Wilson each had one assist.
Johnston blocked 13 shots in goal. She also recorded a team-high four steals.
Grove City exploded for 10 first-half goals against Macalester. Baur scored a career-high five goals while Hulsebus and Johnson each scored four times. Wilson chalked up three goals while Fleming, Hinkle and Wells all scored once.
Hinkle also assisted on five goals. Baur, Hulsebus, Johnson and Wells had two assists apiece and Johnston assisted on one goal. Johnston also stopped a dozen shots.
Baur, Hinkle and Wilson all had four steals and Fleming had three thefts.
All-time, Grove City is 24-1 during regular season CWPA Division III play. This is the third season of CWPA Division III conference play. The Wolverines have won each of the first two league titles.
Grove City will visit Penn State Behrend Thursday at 8 p.m.
