Grove City now 7-0 in CWPA play
UTICA, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team moved to 7-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III conference play Friday night by earning two league wins at Utica College. Grove City opened the night with an 18-2 victory over host Utica. The Wolverines then picked up a 13-7 win over Connecticut College in the nightcap.
Grove City (12-8 overall) bolted to a 10-2 lead by halftime against Utica. Five Wolverines recorded multiple goals, led by a five-goal performance from senior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington).
Senior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) and freshman Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) both fired in four goals while freshman Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) and sophomore Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) each scored twice.
Senior Amanda Brush (Charlton, N.Y./Schenectady Christian) added a goal and an assist. Wilson and junior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) led Grove City with three assists apiece. Hulsebus, Johnson and sophomore Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) all had two assists.
Johnson and Wilson each recorded four steals. Hinkle, Hulsebus and senior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) all had three thefts each. Johnston stopped six shots in goal.
Johnson (six) and Wilson (four) combined for 10 of Grove City's 13 goals in the win over Connecticut College. Baur, Brush and Hulsebus each scored once. Baur, Fleming, Hinkle, Johnson and Johnston all had two assists each and Hulsebus had one assist.
Baur and Hulsebus paced the defensive effort with five steals each. Johnson had four takeaways and Hinkle had three steals. Johnston stopped two shots.
Grove City will conclude CWPA Division III regular season play Saturday with three matches at Utica. The Wolverines face Washington & Jefferson at 10:30 a.m., followed by matches with Penn State Behrend (1:30 p.m.) and Chatham (7:30 p.m.).
