Grove City humbles W&J for CWPA crown

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team captured its third consecutive Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III title Saturday afternoon with a 10-3 title match victory over No. 2 seed Washington & Jefferson in the James E. Longnecker Pool.

Grove City, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, scored the final six goals of the match in sewing up the championship.

Senior Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) paced Grove City with five goals while senior Andrea Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) scored twice. Sophomore Abby Wells (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), freshman Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) and freshman Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) all scored once.

Sophomore Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) recorded three assists and Hinkle assisted two goals. Hulsebus, Johnson, Wilson and senior Amy Fleming (Annandale, Va./Annandale) all tallied one assist.

Hinkle and Hulsebus paced the defense with four steals apiece. Junior goaltender Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) recorded four saves in the win.

Johnson earned the Tournament's Most Valuable Player award while Wilson earned First Team All-Tournament recognition. Johnston received Second Team All-Tournament honors.

Johnson now has 82 goals on the season, the third-highest single-season total in program history. She had 90 goals last year and 84 goals in 2010. Grove City's 18-8 overall record is the program's best since its inception in 2000. The 18 wins match the single-season record first established in 2007.

Grove City has won the CWPA Division III title in each of the league's first seasons. All-time, Grove City is 38-1 in CWPA Division III conference play.
