Grove City humbles W&J, Behrend

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2013 season Saturday with a pair of home victories in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III action at the James E. Longnecker Pool. Grove City rolled to a 12-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson in Saturday's opener. The Wolverines then rolled to a 22-3 win over Penn State Behrend.

Grove City (2-0, 2-0) charged to a 6-0 halftime lead against W&J en route to the win. Sophomore Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) led Grove city with a career-high six goals while freshman Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added three goals. Sophomore Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) scored twice and junior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) also scored. Hinkle recorded two assists while Burrows and Hulsebus each assisted one goal.

In goal, senior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped 10 shots.

Against Penn State Behrend, the Wolverines bolted to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and extended the margin to 17-2 by the end of the third quarter. Seven Grove City players scored, led by Hinkle and Hulsebus with six goals each. Parks pumped in four goals while junior Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Burrows both scored twice. Freshmen Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) and Kira Okray (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) each added goals.

Burrows assisted on four goals and Henderson had two assists. Baur and Hulsebus both recorded assists.

Parks paced the defense with eight steals. Johnston stopped 13 shots.

Saturday's action marked the debut of first-year Grove City head coach Rachel Griepsma. Grove City has won the CWPA Division III title in each of the conference's first three seasons. The Wolverines will visit W&J next Saturday for a pair of matches. Grove City plays Mercyhurst in a non-league match at 3 p.m., followed by a conference battle with W&J at 7 p.m.
