Wolverines split at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo split a pair of Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III conference matches at Carthage College Friday night. Grove City dropped an 11-9 decision to Connecticut College in the opener but rebounded for a 14-7 win over Utica.

Five Grove City players posted multi-goal outings against Utica. Junior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak), sophomore Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) and freshman Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) all fired in three goals for the Wolverines (9-7, 9-1 PAC) while sophomore Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) and freshman Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both scored twice.

Junior Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Wales) scored once and assisted on three goals. Henderson also had three assists against Utica. Hinkle assisted on two goals while Burrows, Hulsebus, Parks, senior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) and freshman Kira Okray (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) all had one assist.

Hinkle paced the defense with seven steals and Parks had three thefts. Johnston stopped five shots in the win.

In the opener, Connecticut outscored Grove City 4-2 in the pivotal fourth period to earn a season split with the Wolverines. Parks led Grove City with three goals while Henderson, Hinkle and Hulsebus each recorded two goals. Baur tallied two assists and Hulsebus had one assist.

Baur and Hinkle paced the defense with three steals each while Johnston stopped 10 shots.

Grove City defeated Connecticut College 7-5 March 22 in Erie, Pa. Saturday, Grove City will wrap up the regular season with a pair of league matches. The Wolverines play host Carthage at 12:20 Eastern before squaring off against Macalester at 4:20. The Wolverines will clinch the top seed in next weekend's CWPA Division III Championships with two wins Saturday.
