Grove City thumps Carthage, Macalester

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team improved to 11-7 overall and 11-1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play Saturday with two victories at Carthage College. Grove City rolled to a 9-2 win over Carthage in Saturday's opener before blasting Macalester 9-1 in the nightcap.

Against Carthage, Grove City led 3-2 after the first period and then blanked the Reds over the final three quarters. Sophomore Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) helped lead Grove City by firing in four goals. Junior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and freshman Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each scored twice and junior Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) added a goal.

Sophomore Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) recorded four assists and Baur assisted two goals. Burrows, Hulsebus and freshman Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) all had one assist.

Baur, Burrows and Hinkle paced the defense with four steals. In goal, senior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped seven shots.

Hulsebus rifled in five goals against Macalester and Hinkle added three scores. Henderson also scored. Baur assisted three goals while Hinkle had two assists. Burrows and Parks each recorded one assist.

Hulsebus also blocked three shots while Hinkle had three steals. Johnston took a shutout into the fourth quarter and finished with 13 saves.

Grove City will be the top seed in next week's CWPA Division III Championships at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. The Wolverines are in pursuit of their fourth straight conference title.

Monday night, the Wolverines will visit Gannon in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
