Grove City falls in title match

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo squad concluded the 2013 season Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 setback at Connecticut College in the title match of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships. Grove City finishes the season with a 12-9 overall record.

Connecticut College, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, broke a 1-1 halftime tie by scoring three times in the third period and took a 4-1 lead into the final quarter.

Junior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) scored twice for Grove City and freshman Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) also scored for the Wolverines.

Junior Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and freshman Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) both recorded assists. Baur paced the defense wtih four steals and Henderson had three thefts.

In goal, senior Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) stopped nine shots.

Baur, sophomore Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) and sophomore Lauren Hulsebus (Belmont, Mich./Rockford) all earned First Team All-Tournament honors. Johnston earned Second Team All-Tournament recognition. Head coach Rachel Griepsma earned the tournament's Coach of the Year award.

Grove City had won the CWPA Division III title in each of the last three seasons. The Wolverines entered this year's tournament as the top seed in the seven-team draw. Connecticut College had been designated as tournament host prior to the season.
