Wolverines open with win

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2014 season Saturday by competing in the Virginia Military Institute Invitational.

The Wolverines opened play with a 14-4 victory over Penn State Behrend. Grove City then dropped decisions to a pair of NCAA Division II foes. Notre Dame (Ohio) pulled out a 14-10 win over Grove City while Mercyhurst secured a 15-8 decision over Grove City.

Six different Grove City players scored against Behrend. Junior Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) pumped in four goals while sophomore Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each scored three times.

Senior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) scored twice while sophomore Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) and sophomore Kira Okray (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) both added a goal.

Burrows, Okray and Parks all had three assists each. Henderson, Hinkle and Jank each assisted one goal.

Defensively, Parks blocked three shots while Hinkle had four steals and a pair of blocks. Janks recorded three steals. In goal, freshman Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stopped 10 shots in her collegiate debut.

Hinkle fired in five goals against Notre Dame and Parks added three goals. Burrows and Jank also scored. Hinkle assisted two goals while Burrows, Hinkle, Okray and Parks had one assist apiece.

Frank stopped nine shots in goal.

Hinkle scored three times in Saturday's nightcap while Henderson added a pair of goals. Burrows, Jank and Parks all scored one goal. Henderson assisted two scores and Hinkle also had an assist.

Frank tallied four saves.

Grove City (1-2) will face Washington & Jefferson and host V.M.I. in Sunday's action at the two-day event.
