Grove City goes 2-1
UTICA, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team moved to 3-1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III conference Saturday by picking up two league wins at Utica College.
Grove City opened the day by rallying for a 9-6 win over Macalester. After dropping a 12-9 decision to Carthage, the Wolverines rebounded for a 10-7 win over Monmouth (Ill.).
Against Macalester, Grove City trailed 5-3 at halftime but bounced back over the final two quarters for the win. Grove City blanked Macalester in the fourth period.
Five Wolverine players scored in the win, including a three-goal outing from junior Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton). Sophomore Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) both scored twice while senior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and sophomore Kira Okray (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) each added a goal.
Sophomore Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) assisted three goals while Hinkle had two assists. Jank and Parks both assisted one goal.
Defensively, Hinkle led Grove City with a season-high 11 steals while Burrows had four steals. Okray collected three thefts. In goal, freshman Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stopped seven shots.
Hinkle accounted for eight of Grove City's nine goals against Carthage while Jank also scored. Park collected an assist. Jank led the defense with seven steals while Hinkle and Henderson each had five takeaways. Parks added three steals. Frank recorded six saves.
Six players scored in the Wolverines' finale against Monmouth. Burrows, Henderson, Hinkle and Parks all scored twice while Okray and freshman Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) also scored.
Hinkle assisted three goals while Henderson had two assists. Burrows, Jank, Okray and Parks all had one assist. Frank and Hinkle split time in goal. Frank stopped five shots and Hinkle had three saves.
Officials stopped the Monmouth match after three quarters due to inadequate air quality in the facility, according to the CWPA office. The air quality issue forced the final two scheduled matches to be postponed Saturday night. Grove City (4-5) is scheduled to play Connecticut College Sunday at 11:30 a.m. but the schedule is currently subject to change.
