Wolverines split at CWPA Tournament

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team went 1-1 Saturday in the first day of action at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships, hosted by Macalester.

Grove City, the fourth seed, opened play with an 11-8 setback against fifth-seeded Macalester. Grove City bounced back for a 15-8 victory over No. 8 Monmouth (Ill.) later in the day.

Sophomore Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both scored three times in the opener against Macalester. Junior Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) and senior Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) each added goals.

Hinkle also assisted two goals while Jank and Parks each recorded one assist.

Hinkle paced the defense with five steals and Burrows had three thefts. Freshman goaltender Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stopped six shots.

Grove City (10-11 overall) bolted to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter against Monmouth. Hinkle rifled in six goals for the Wolverines while sophomore Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) pumped in three goals.

Burrows and Parks also scored twice. Jank and sophomore Kira Okray (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) both registered goals against Monmouth.

Parks had a team-high three assists while freshman Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) assisted on two goals. Burrows and Jank each added one assist.

Jank led the defense with seven steals. Hinkle and Parks both collected five steals and Henderson tallied four takeaways. Frank stopped seven shots in goal.

Grove City will conclude the tournament Sunday at 11:20 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time in the fifth-place match.
