Wolverines downed by Mercyhurst
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A cold second quarter proved to be the difference for the Grove City College women's water polo team as the Wolverines fell to NCAA Division II foe Mercyhurst 16-9 in non-conference action on Wednesday evening in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.
Senior Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) led the Wolverines (4-6) on her Senior Night with three goals, three assists and six steals while sophomore Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added two goals, two assists, five steals and four sprint wins. Junior Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored twice and assisted on a third goal while junior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) and freshman Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) both scored once.
Mercyhurst (8-7) would score first, but Parks would counter with back-to-back goals and Hinkle added her first goal of the night to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. The Lakers would cut the Wolverine advantage in half, but Henderson would find the back of the cage with just 11 seconds remaining to put Grove City on top 4-2 after one quarter.
That lead would be short-lived, as Mercyhurst came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 6-0 to take an 8-4 halftime lead before holding on in the second half for the victory.
Sophomore Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stopped eight shots in goal for the Wolverines.
Grove City will play five matches Friday through Sunday as part of the CWPA Division III Weekend at Connecticut College.
