Wolverines whip Macalester; advance to semifinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened play in the 2015 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships by rolling to a 14-6 victory over No. 4 seed Macalester in the quarterfinal round Friday evening at the James E. Longnecker Pool. Grove City, the No. 5 seed, will host top-seeded Connecticut College in the tournament semifinals Saturday at 11:40 a.m.

Grove City broke open Friday's match by outscoring the Saints 8-2 in the second half. Senior Jocelyn Hinkle (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton) and junior Ashley Parks (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each fired in six goals to pace the Wolverines. Junior Kira Okray (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and freshman Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) also scored in the victory.

Sophomore Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) recorded a team-high five assists while Okray tallied three assists. Blume and Hinkle each had two assists while junior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) added an assist.

Defensively, Jank tallied seven steals while Blume and Hinkle each collected five thefts. In goal, sophomore Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stopped four shots.

During the regular season, Grove City dropped both matches with Macalester. Macalester won the first meeting, 13-11, in Monmouth, Ill., March 20. Macalester then pulled out an 8-6 win over Grove City in New London, Conn., March 28.

Connecticut College reached the semifinals with an 18-4 win over No. 8 seed Monmouth in Friday's first match. Connecticut College is the two-time defending CWPA Division III champion. Grove City won the first three conference championships from 2010 to 2012.
