Wolverines open 2016 season

LA VERNE, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2016 season Thursday evening with a 24-3 setback at perennial California powerhouse La Verne at Las Flores Pool. La Verne (1-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period.

Senior Ashley Parks (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), junior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and sophomore Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) all scored for Grove City (0-1). In goal, junior Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) and freshman Sonni Kiefer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) combined to stop three shots.

Grove City will play a pair of matches Friday at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Wolverines meet NAIA member Azusa Pacific at 1 p.m. Eastern before facing Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. Eastern.
