Wolverines go 2 for 3 at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III league play Friday by winning two of three matches at Carthage College.

Grove City (2-5, 2-1) opened the day with a 16-6 win over Utica. Following a 12-11 double-overtime setback against host Carthage, Grove City rebounded for a 14-7 victory over Monmouth (Ill.) in Friday's finale.

The Wolverines charged out to a 15-1 lead against Utica in the opener as all 14 Grove City players saw action. Junior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), sophomore Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and freshman Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all fired in three goals for Grove City.

Meanwhile, senior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) scored twice and recorded six assists. Freshman Sonni Kiefer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) also scored two goals in the win while senior Ashley Parks (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington), junior Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and sophomore Brynna Bartlett (Olive Branch, Miss./St. George's) each scored once.

Bartlett also assisted on two goals, as did junior goalkeeper Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County). Blume, Klimek, Parks and Spicher all had one assist.

Henderson paced the defense with four steals while Bartlett had three takeaways and a pair of blocks. Frank stopped six shots.

Against Carthage, Grove City trailed 9-6 after three periods but rallied to send the match into overtime in a 10-10 tie. Each team scored in the first overtime before Carthage scored the game-winner in the sixth period.

Parks pumped in four goals while Jank had three goals. Blume scored twice while Henderson and Spicher each contributed a goal. Henderson tallied four assists. Blume assisted two goals while Jank, Kiefer and Spicher had one assist apiece.

Henderson, Kiefer, Jank and Parks all posted three steals. Kiefer blocked two shots. In goal, Frank chalked up 11 saves.

Grove City bolted to an 8-3 halftime lead over Monmouth, then sewed up the win by scoring five more goals in the third quarter.

Henderson and Parks both fired in four goals in the finale while Jank and Kiefer each scored twice. Spicher and Blume added goals. Henderson also assisted three goals while Kiefer and Parks had two assists each. Blume, Jank and Spicher all assisted on one goal.

Defensively, Henderson and Jank both had four steals while Kiefer collected three steals. Frank had 10 saves in goal.

Grove City will face Macalester and Connecticut College in league play Saturday.
