Grove City splits two CWPA matches

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team moved to 4-3 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III league play Friday by splitting two matches at Penn State Behrend's Junker Center. Grove City opened the day with a 13-8 setback against Connecticut College. However, the Wolverines (4-8 overall) rebounded for a 17-12 victory over Utica in Friday's finale.

Five Grove City players posted multiple-goal efforts in the win over Utica. Senior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) paced the Grove City offense with four goals while junior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and sophomore Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) both scored three times. Junior Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and freshman Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) each scored twice.

Blume and Henderson each recorded assists. Jank led the defense with four steals and senior Ashley Parks (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) collected three steals.

In goal, freshman Sonni Kiefer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) made five saves while classmate Rachel Blasdell (Leesburg, Va./Homeschooled) stopped two shots in the second half.

Jank scored four times against Connecticut but Grove City's six-goal rally in the fourth period could not fully erase the deficit. Blume, sophomore Brynna Bartlett (Olive Branch, Miss./St. Joseph's) and freshman Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) also scored in the opener.

Jank also posted five steals and Bartlett added three thefts. Kiefer stopped seven shots.

Grove City will conclude its three-day trip to Erie with three conference matches Saturday at Penn State Behrend. Grove City faces Macalester at 9 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match with Carthage. The Wolverines will close the weekend against Monmouth (Ill.) at 5 p.m.
