Grove City takes 2 of 3 in CWPA play

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned two Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III action Saturday at Penn State Behrend. Grove City opened the day with a 9-3 win over Macalester. Following an 18-5 setback to Carthage, the Wolverines rebounded for a 9-8 victory over Monmouth (Ill.).

Sophomore Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) paced Grove City in the opener by firing in four goals. Senior Ashley Parks (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) pumped in three goals while junior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored once.

Parks also assisted two goals while Blume, senior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) and junior Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) all had one assist.

Henderson and Spicher each had three steals. Freshman goalie Sonni Kiefer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) stopped four shots.

Against Monmouth, Parks scored four goals for Grove City while Blume, Henderson, Jank, Klimek and Spicher each scored once. Blume also assisted three goals and Jank had two assists.

Jank also led the defense with five steals. Kiefer stopped 10 shots in goal.

Carthage jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter of Saturday's middle match. Blume and Spicher each scored twice while Jank added a goal. Henderson, Jank and Parks all tallied one assist. Blume and Jank both had three steals. Kiefer made seven saves.

Grove City (6-9, 6-4 CWPA) will host Mercyhurst in non-conference play Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
