Wolverines fall twice on Senior Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo dropped a pair of Collegiate Water Polo Division III matches on Friday evening, falling to Penn State Behrend 12-6 in the opener before losing to Washington and Jefferson 13-3 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Wolverines (6-13, 6-7 CWPA DIII) played the Lions (5-15, 5-7) tight for 20 minutes, closing within 6-5 on a goal by sophomore Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection Prep) with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter. Penn State Behrend would take control from there, however, closing the match on a 6-1 run to earn the win.

Senior Ashley Parks (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) led the Wolverines with three goals and two assists in the setback while junior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), freshman Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Blume each added a goal. Senior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian), Jank and Spicher each registered one assist while Jank led the defense with three steals.

Junior Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and freshman Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian), with Schmidt recording a pair of saves in the second half.

In the nightcap, Washington and Jefferson led 4-0 after a quarter and pulled away in the following three. Jank led the Wolverines with two goals, an assist and a steal while Parks recorded one goal, one assist and three steals. Henderson led the Grove City field defense with four steals while Schmidt made four saves in the cage.

Prior to the second match, Grove City honored seniors Henderson and Parks for their four-year contributions to the program.

Grove City (6-11 overall) returns to action tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. match at Penn State Behrend.
