Wolverines rally for win in season finale

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team concluded the 2016 season Sunday by rallying for a 10-9 victory over Monmouth (Ill.) in the fifth place match of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships, hosted by Connecticut College.

Senior Ashley Parks (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored the game-winning goal with 17 seconds left, completing the Grove City comeback. Grove City trailed 8-5 entering the fourth quarter but outscored Monmouth 5-1 over the final eight minutes.

Sophomore Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored three times for Grove City (8-15) while junior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both scored twice. Senior Ashley Henderson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) and sophomore Brynna Bartlett (Olive Branch, Miss./St. George's) each added goals.

Blume also assisted three goals while Jank, Parks and Spicher tallied two assists each. Henderson also recorded an assist.

Henderson recorded a team-leading three steals on defense. In goal, freshman Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) stopped six shots.

Jank earned First Team All-Tournament honors following the conclusion of the two-day event. The Wolverines will lose Henderson and Parks to graduation. Henderson and Parks both started all four seasons for Grove City and co-captained the 2016 squad.
