Grove City earns 5th at Sudeck Classic

CLEVELAND -- Five Grove City runners placed in the top 50 Saturday at the Case Western Reserve Sudeck Classic as the Grove City College women's cross country team opened 2007 with a fifth-place finish at the 14-team event. Grove City accumulated 130 team points, trailing only Case Western (42 points), Oberlin (56), Baldwin-Wallace (107) and Edinboro (112).

Junior Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) led Grove City with a third-place finish. A 2006 NCAA qualifier, Carter completed the course in 18 minutes, 53 seconds. Junior Julia Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) finished 12th with a time of 19:58. Seward missed the 2006 cross country season due to injury.

Also for Grove City, senior Amanda Hewitt (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) finished 33rd (20:46), one spot ahead of freshman Brigitte Fryan (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson). Fryan took 34th with a time of 20:47. Freshman Laura Koller (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) crossed in 48th place, posting a time of 21:13.

Edinboro's Rachael Lanzel won the individual race with a time of 17:53.

Grove City will return to action next Saturday, September 8 at the California University of Pennsylvania Invitational.
