Wolverines place 8 in top 20, win California Invite

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team captured first place at the California University of Pennsylvania Invitational Saturday morning, accumulating a mere 30 team points. NCAA Division II Clarion took second with 40 points.

Eight Grove City runner finished in the top 18, led by a second-place finish from junior Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham). Carter finished the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 41.70 seconds and trailed only Clarion's Erin Richard (18:35.70). Junior Julia Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) finished fourth in 20:11.10 while freshman Brigitte Fryan (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) placed seventh in 20:38.40.

Also for Grove City, freshman Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central) took ninth (20:43.00) and freshman Jessica Vernon (Butler, Pa./Butler) crossed in 11th place with a time of 20:54.00. Three other Grove City runner finished in the top 18. Freshman Laura Koller (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) took 15th in 21:21.80 while senior Amanda Hewitt (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) placed 16th (21:27.40). Senior Rachael Smith (Columbia, Md./Hammond) finished 18th with a time of 21:32.70.

Grove City will return to action Sept. 28 at the Lehigh Invitational.
