Wolverines earn 3rd at Gettysburg; Carter wins 3rd straight
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Junior Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) earned her third consecutive individual title Saturday morning, helping the Grove City College women's cross country team earn place at the 14-team Gettysburg Invitational. Carter's title helped Grove City accumulate a mere 63 team points. Dickinson won the team title with 37 points while Ohio Wesleyan finished second with 60.
Carter won the race by covering the 6-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 11.23 seconds. She won by 39.22 seconds over runner-up Layla Naficy of Dickinson. Two weeks ago, Carter won the Lehigh Paul Short "White" race. Last Saturday, she won the Slippery Rock University Open.
Three other Grove City runners earned top-20 finishes Saturday at Gettysburg. Junior Julia Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) took fifth in 23:02.15 while freshman Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central) took 16th in 23:53.94. Freshman Brigitte Fryan (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) finished 20th with a time of 24:08.44. Sophomore Rachel Nelson (Dover, Mass./Lexington Christian) finished 26th in 24:39.15.
Also for Grove City, freshman Jessica Vernon (Butler, Pa./Butler) finished 30th in 24:44.58. Seniors Amanda Hewitt (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) and Rachael Smith (Columbia, Md./Hammond) took 31st and 32nd, respectively. Hewitt crossed in 24:45.19 while Smith finished in 24:45.90.
Dickinson is currently 12th in the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national Division III poll. Dickinson is also the top team in the USTFCCCA Mideast Region poll. Grove City entered the week as the region's No. 4 team. Johns Hopkins' the No. 3 team in the Mideast, took seventh at Gettysburg Saturday.
Grove City returns to action in two weeks at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
