Wolverines win Westminster Invitational

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team opened the 2008 season Saturday by winning Westminster College's 14-team Fisher Invitational. The Wolverines accumulated just 49 points in capturing the team title. NCAA Division II entry Gannon took second with 69 points.

Seniors Kristen Carter (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham) and Julia Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) placed first and second, respectively, in the 139-runner field. Carter covered the 6-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 26.6 seconds. Seward, meanwhile, recorded a time of 22:35.2.

Overall, five Grove City runners placed in the top 20. In addition to Carter and Seward, sophomore Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) placed eighth in 24:46.0 while sophomore Kate McRoberts (Green, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) finished 18th with a time of 25:45.0. Sophomore Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) finished 20th (25:51.4). Also for Grove City, junior Rachel Nelson (Dover, Mass./Lexington Christian) finished 23rd with a time of 26:10.4.

The Wolverines will compete at the California (Pa.) Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.
