Wolverines compete at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team took seventh out of 10 teams at the Division I-dominated Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational Friday evening. Grove City earned 193 team points in the meet. Penn State won the team title with 33 points, followed by Ohio State (47) and Illinois (54).

Grove City placed four runners in the top 50, led by 29th-place freshman Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick), who completed the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 24 seconds. Fellow freshman Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) took 32nd with a time of 23:39.

Junior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central) earned 34th (24:18) while junior Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) followed in 46th with a time of 24:18.

Freshman Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) placed 52nd in 24:51. Two other freshman rounded out the Wolverines' scoring lineup Friday as Mary Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) earned 55th in 25:05 and Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) came in 57th (25:18).

Grove City finished ahead of Mideast region foe Messiah, which entered the week ranked second in the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association regional rankings. Grove City is sixth in the most recent USTFCCCA poll.

The Wolverines return to action September 26 at the Saint Vincent Invitational in Latrobe, Pa.
